He and the king became friends, and the Voltaire room was frequently occupied by the philosopher during his stay in Potsdam from 1750-1753. Photograph blindstamped "HB/1890" in lower right corner. Albumen silver photograph, 7 1/2"h x 10 1/4"w (19.1 x 26 cm), of Schloss Herrenchiemsee in Bavaria. One of several grandiose fantasy palaces built by Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886), it was modeled on the palace of Versailles, but was unfinished at the time of the king's death under mysterious circumstances. I love that the only person in the whole photo is that bearded fellow standing squarely on the steps and facing the photographer, one arm akimbo. Attributed to Jos. Albert, Munich, circa 1890. Mounted to a period pale green stiff card mount measuring 12"h x 14"w, that has a contemporary magazine article about the palace neatly affixed to verso. In fine, clean condition. $50.00
