Edizione Esposito Albumen photo of Pompei Excavation ASP112-12

Terrific albumen photo, 8"h x 10"w (20 x 25 cm), of the ongoing 19th century excavations at Pompei. Note the progression of the workers climbing up the hill shouldering baskets of soil to be emptied into the waiting carts. Note also the guards in their caps and long coats who are there presumably to thwart any pilfering of the site. Titled and signed in the negative along the bottom edge; "186 Pompei ultimi scavi (Edizione Esposito)". In this instance the title can, I believe, be translated as "latest excavations". Photo circa 1875. Mounted to a period stiff, grey card mount, 10"h x 12"w" . Photo has some loss of toning to upper quarter. Mount has a slight warp, is chipped along edges, and has three small, evenly spaced holes along left margin, presumably for placing in a ring binder. Else, photo is clean with good contrast and focus. Scan of mount available upon request. Very scarce. $250.00

Albumen photograph of Samoa ASP113-12

Albumen photo, 6"h x 8"w (15 x 20 cm), of what is most likely the harbor of Apia in Samoa. There are no signatures, blind stamps, etc., so it's difficult to attribute this image to any of the professional photographers actually based in Samoa at the time such as John Davis or Thomas Andrew, or to any of the itinerant professional photographers who traveled the islands of the South Pacific documenting the people and the landscapes. Photo circa 1890. Mounted to a period grey, stiff card mount (10"h x 12"w) that has a slight warp, is lightly soiled and chipped along the edges and has three small, evenly spaced holes along left margin, presumably for placing in a ring binder. Written on verso of mount in pencil in a period hand is "Samoa". Scan of mount available upon request. Photo in clean, very good condition with some light, scattered foxing to surface and one small blemish in the negative, seen just to the right of the the last figure on the right. Uncommon. $125.00

Wonderful albumen photo, 8 3/4"h x 11"w (22 x 28 cm), of a colorful street scene in Kandy, Ceylon which shows a procession of elephants surrounded by followers and onlookers. Photo credited in the mount "Scowen", the firm founded in Kandy by Englishman Charles T. Scowen, and which remained active in Ceylon from approximately 1876-1893. Mounted to a period grey stiff card mount (10" x 12") that has a slight warp and light chipping along the edges. Photo has three small, evenly spaced holes along its far left edge, presumably for placing in a ring binder, and are visible in the scan. Else in fine, clean condition with beautiful depth of toning. $95.00

Scowen & Co., Ceylon albumen photo of a banyan tree ASP116-12

Beautiful albumen photo, 8 3/4"h x 11"w (22 x 28 cm), of a road in Ceylon with an immense banyan tree arched over it. Credited and titled in the negative; "Scowen & Co. Ceylon / Ficus Bengalensis. (Banyan)". This is a very well known image in the oeuvre of this firm, founded by Englishman Charles T. Scowen in Kandy, and active approximately from 1876-1893. This image, with it's amazing depth and clarity and charming sense of "place", amply demonstrates Scowen's skill as a photographer. Mounted to a period grey stiff card mount (10" x 12") that has a slight warp and light chipping along the edges. Photo has three small, evenly spaced holes along its far left edge, presumably for placing in a ring binder, and are visible in the scan. Else in excellent condition with wonderfully crisp toning. $110.00 SOLD

G. Brogi albumen photo of Naples ASP119-12

Albumen photo, 10"h x 8"w (25 x 20 cm), of an incredibly animated street scene in Naples by Giacomo Brogi, 1822-1881. Numbered, titled and credited in the negative. I love the tall, vertical streetscape criss-crossed by the clothes lines. Note that many people in the photo, including the large group gathered at center on the stairs, have actually stopped to pose for the photographer. Mounted to a period grey stiff card mount (12" x 10") with a slight warp, light soiling and chipping to edges. Photo in near fine, clean condition with good toning. Scan of mount available upon request. $55.00

Philip Henry Delamotte albumen photo of the Crystal Palace, Sydenahm ASP121-12

Terrific albumen photo, 7 1/2"h x 11 1/2"w (19 x 29 cm) of the Crystal Palace by Philip Henry Delamotte, 1821-1889. Delamotte's association with the Crystal Palace is well known. It was he who was commissioned to photograph it's reconstuction in the years 1851-1854, after the original structure had been dismantled in Hyde Park, and moved to Sydenham. This series of photographs are famous for being one of the first uses of photography for documentary purposes. What is less well known is that Delamotte continued his association with the Crystal Palace, and produced another series of photographs of the finished structure at the height of it's fame, circa 1859-1860. The photograph for sale here is one of those. It shows the Garden Front of the structure with the Upper Terrace fountains in full display. Note the people standing at the top of the tower and the winding staircase they had to climb to reach there. Photo has mild loss of toning to right and left margins. Else in fine, clean condition with lovely, strong sepia contrast. Mounted to a period grey stiff card mount (10" x 12") with a slight warp, and some chipping to the edges. For an excellent account of this second series, as well as a reproduction of this image (pages 58-59), read Ian Leith's "Delamotte's Crystal Palace: A Victorian Pleasure Dome Revealed", English Heritage, 2005. Scan of mount available upon request. Very special. $495.00 SOLD
