Charlie Tung Asian American Businessman Cabinet Card ASP199-3

Cabinet card portrait of an Asian American man. Written on the verso in pen in a contemporary hand is "Charley Tung". Cabinet cards of Asian American subjects are relatively scarce, and even more so from the agricultural heartland. To have the subject identified is even scarcer.┬áTecumseh, Nebraska was, and still is, a very small town in the rural southeast corner of the state. It’s intriguing to wonder how this fellow ended up there, far removed from the traditional centers of Asian immigration to the states. I was able to locate a copy of the 1898 Tecumseh, NE business directory and listed in this directory, under the heading of “Laundry, Chinese and Japanese Goods” is Charley Tung, Third Street. While this doesn’t explain how he arrived in this town, it does explain his profession. Also listed in this same directory under “Photographers” is C. M. Shaw, the owner of the studio that took this photo. Photo circa 1890. Studio mark of "Shaw, Tecumseh, Neb." In fine, clean condition. $25.00 SOLD

East Liverpool, Ohio fire Gealtin Silver Print East Liverpool, Ohio fire Gelatin Silver Print ASP22-3

Pair of gelatin silver prints, 4 3/4"h x 3 3/4"w (12 x 9.5 cm), each individually mounted to a black card mount. Both depict the fire of February 26, 1905 in East Liverpool, Ohio that destroyed a section of the downtown business district. The first photo is the shell of the Ikirt Building, erected in 1892. The second photo shows smoldering ruins with various signs placed among the debris. Two of the signs are from the Barnes Safe & Lock Co. of Pittsburgh, and the George H. Owen Insurance & Real Estate. In addition, there's a sign pertaining to the Red Cross Dental Clinic mounted on a pole, and a great sign attached to a collapsed wall that reads; "Bendheim Will Be Ready For Business Saturday March 4 at Joseph Bros." attesting to the firm's determination to do business less than one week after being burnt out. Both photos in fine condition on clean mounts. Mounts measure 7 1/2"h x 5 1/2"w. A superb and very scarce historical record. $125.00, the pair.

Children Gelatin Silver Print ASP23-3

Very endearing gelatin silver print, 10"h x 13"w (25 x 33 cm), of a boy and girl at play, most likely done in a photographer's studio. They're both wearing high button shoes while seated at a small table against a plain background. The table has painted tin cups and alphabet building blocks scattered on it, and the little girl is holding a stuffed dog and one of the painted cups. The photo has some scattered minimal scratching to its surface, with some very light edge wear. Else, beautiful toning and clarity. No photographer's credits, circa 1920. $95.00

Wade L. Lawrence Albumen Print ASP32-3

Albumen print, 7 1/2"h x 9 1/2"w (19 x 24 cm), of a 19th century brick mercantile building in Syracuse, New York topped by a signboard that reads "M. Kohles. Dry Good, Notions, Groceries, Crockery, Etc., Established 1868". On the street level the two right store fronts are taken by the same, while the left store front is occupied by "King & Nies, Fresh and Salt Meats, Fish, etc." In the doorways of the shops the employees pose for the photographer while a small boy sits on a ledge looking "down the road", perhaps at an approaching trolley whose tracks run in the road before the shops. The building, though somewhat altered in appearance, is still standing today just off of Syracuse's central business district. On the back is stamped; "Photographed by Wade L. Lawrence" with additional information about how frames and duplicates are furnished at "Goodwins" in Syracuse. Attached to a stiff beige paper mount (9 1/2"h x 11 1/2"w) that has one 1" tear in it, not affecting photo, which retains great contrast and superb detail. Photo taken circa 1885. Scan of mount and/or backmark available upon request. $95.00

Boy with a toy rifle cabinet card ASP97-3

Albumen studio portrait, 5 1/2"h x 4"w (14 x 10 cm), mounted as a cabinet card, of a young boy standing on a fur skin rug holding a toy rifle. That's a very elaborate blouse he's wearing! But he seems to have alot of poise for a young fellow, as well as alot of charm. Studio mark of "Elmer Chickering, Boston". Both photo and mount, recto and verso, in fine, clean condition. $85.00

Ohio Fireman Gelatin Silver Print ASP26-3

Gelatin silver studio portrait print, 5 1/2"h x 3 1/2"w (14 x 9 cm), of a fireman/policeman. He poses in his fireman's dress uniform with his police badge ("East Liverpool Police, #6") pinned to his coat. Mounted to a black card board blind stamped "McDevitt, East Liverpool, Ohio". Circa 1910. Some foxing to image surface. Mount measures 7"h x 5"w. Scan of mount available upon request. $45.00

Farmstead Albumen Print ASP27-3

Albumen print, 7"h x 9 1/2"w (18 x 24 cm), of a farmhouse and its occupants. The photographer has taken the time to carefully position his subjects, achieving not just another prosaic "house with occupants" photograph, but an intriguing study of a family. Before a rambling farm house with a windmill on it's roof, amidst a garden, pose the family of mother and father and seven children. To the far right stand the father and his eldest son, dressed almost identically down to the watch chains on their vests. Next to them stand two younger sons half hidden by flowers, both with their arms akimbo and looking forthrightly into the camera. In the center sits the mother on a chair in the garden path holding an infant in her lap, while grouped around her stand three daughters, statue-like, facing in different directions, their gazes directed away from the camera. Circa 1890. Mounted to a beige mat (11"h x 13"w) with a textured overmat. Some loss of toning, but overall in very nice condition.$50.00

Albumen portrait of M. J. Van Buskirk, 1860's ASP193-3

Oval albumen studio portrait of a woman, 7 1/4 " h x 5 1/4"w (18 x 13 cm), attached to a period beige stiff paper mount. Obviously a woman of privilege, she wears an elaborate dress and lace shawl, along with a suite of cameo earrings, brooch and bracelet. There's particularly fine lighting in this portrait by an unidentified photographer. Written on the mount verso in pencil is "M. J. Van Buskirk". Photo circa 1865. Image in fine condition with excellent toning and contrast. Mount has some dinging to corners with damage from pinholes. Scan of full mount available upon request. $75.00

"Nautical" theme portrait of a woman cabinet card ASP98-3

Here's an unusual and very enigmatic albumen photo, 5 1/2"h x 4" w (14 x 10 cm), mounted as a cabinet card, that raises a number of questions. It's a bust length portrait of a woman surrounded by a nautical theme montage of a fishing net, an anchor, branches of coral, etc. Was she the wife of a fisherman? Was she perhaps an employee, such as the cook, on a ship? Could she have been "lost at sea"? The only reference that I could find to the simple mark of "Brinkmeier's Studio" on the mount recto, was a tenuous connection to Ohio and West Virginia. Touch of soiling to mount recto, else image in fine, clean condition. $42.00

4th of July Silver Gelatin Print ASP30-3

Terrific gelatin silver print, 6"h x 9 1/2"w (15 x 24 cm), of what is most certainly a Fourth of July celebration. Two young couples pose in a canoe, smiling broadly with their arms around each other, while two American flags are perched at either end. In addition, the woman on the right has another flag draped over her legs. A great all-American image. Attached to a grey stiff paper mount. In fine condition. No photographer's credits. Circa 1910. $65.00
