CDV portrait by Alder, Cheltenham CDV330-8 Full length studio portrait CDV of a young woman. I wonder if the subject realized what a masterful image the photographer had created of her. With its remarkable lighting, contrast and clarity, the sheen on her hair, the way she's posed, and the "mood" that's been created (to say nothing of the dress!), this particular image is miles above the pedestrian studio CDV. She was a very lucky customer. Backmark of "Alder, Cheltenham (UK)". In absolutely fine, as-new condition. $25.00
CDV portrait by W. Horrobine, Morecambe (Lancashire) CDV331 verso CDV331-8 "The Connoisseurs". That's the title written in ink in a period hand below the image of this marvelous studio CDV portrait of four brothers. The eldest one sits before an easel and canvas, palette and paintbrush in hand, while his three younger siblings "critically" regard his efforts. Note the endearing pose of the youngest one to the right, standing there with hand-on-hip. The photographer has expertly posed the group and then vignetted the "scene". Written on the back in the same hand are the names and ages of the four Crofton brothers. The eldest, 1846-1904, became the Reverend Addison Crofton. The next brother, Henry Thomas Crofton lived from 1848-1928. I have no dates for the third brother, Richard Elliott (?) Crofton, but the youngest brother, 1854-1936, became the Reverend William d'Abzac Crofton. Their ages would date this image to 1863. Backmark of "Wm. Horrobine, Morecambe (Lancashire, UK)". In fine, clean condition. Very unusual and special. $100.00
