Extremely nice collection of five CDV portraits from the same English studio. Each woman is elegantly dressed and posed with excellent lighting, use of props and centering of figures. There's no doubt that this studio catered to the carriage trade, and did it well. Backmarks of "Daniel Jones, Photographer, Liverpool". All five images and mounts in fine, clean condition with strong contrast. $40.00, the collection.
Queen Victoria CDV by Hills & Saunders CDV277-9 Vignetted studio portrait CDV of Queen Victoria (1819-1901). The longest reigning monarch in British history, she was known affectionately as the "Grandmother of Europe" after having arranged the marriages of her nine children and numerous grandchildren amongst that continent's ruling houses. Studio mark of "Hills & Saunders, London". In clean, fine condition. $35.00 SOLD
Prince Albert CDV by Mayall CDV278-9 Studio CDV of Albert, the Prince Consort (1819-1861). This is believed to be the last photo taken of Albert before his untimely death in December of 1861. It's actually a full length image of him sitting at a desk or table, with a quill pen in hand. After Albert's death the photographer issued this oval portrait detail as a CDV memento, of which many thousands were purchased by the British public. Studio mark of "(John Jabez Edwin) Mayall, London". Not particularly scarce but this example is in excellent condition. $32.00
Victoria, Princess Royal CDV by Hills & Saunders CDV279-9 Studio CDV portrait of Victoria, Princess Royal (1840-1901) first child and eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She married Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1858 and upon his ascension to the throne as German Emperor Frederick III in 1888 became (briefly) Empress of Germany. She was the mother of Wilhelm II, the last Kaiser. Here she's shown posing with her daughter Princess Charlotte of Prussia. Studio mark of "Hills & Saunders, London". A few scattered surface marks which I believe are in the negative. Else in fine, clean condition. Very scarce. $75.00 SOLD
Edward, Prince of Wales CDV by Hills & Saunders CDV280-9 Vignetted studio portrait CDV of Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910) second child and eldest son of Victoria and Albert. Heir apparent to the British throne throughout the long reign of his mother, he ruled as Edward VII from 1901-1910. Studio mark of "Hills & Saunders, London". Some light, scattered foxing to image. Else in clean near fine condition. $30.00
Alexandra, Princess of Wales CDV by Hills & Saunders CDV281-9 Vignetted studio portrait CDV of Alexandra, Princess of Wales (1844-1925). Born a princess of Denmark she married Edward, Prince of Wales in 1863 and became queen consort upon his ascension to the throne as Edward VII. Studio mark of "Hills & Saunders, London". Princess Alice CDV by Hills & Saunders CDV283-9 Studio portrait CDV of Princess Alice (1843-1878) third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Alfred. Married Louis IV Grand Duke of Hesse in 1862. She died of diptheria after nursing her children through an outbreak of it. She was the mother of Alexandra, the last Tsarina of Russia. Studio mark of "Hills & Saunders, Eton & Oxford". A few scattered black marks to image that are in the negative. Else, in fine clean condition. $50.00
Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh CDV by London Stereoscopic Co. CDV284-9 Studio portrait CDV of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900) fourth child and second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia in 1871, and ruled as the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha from 1893 until his death from throat cancer in 1900. Written in ink on verso in a period hand is; "Fred Elmer & Alphonzo B. Lemon / Ages 10 & 7 yrs / taken Jan 1866". Backmark of "J. M. Adams, Elgin, Il". With a blue, stamp-canceled two cent proprietary tax stamp affixed to verso. In fine, clean condition. $22.00

McHenry, Freeport, IL CDV337-9 Interesting pair of vignetted portrait CDV's of an elderly couple mounted onto "raised" ovals. These could very well be photographs of earlier images. It wasn't uncommon for people to take daguerreotypes, etc. into the photography studio and have CDV's made of them. Backmark of "W. McHenry, Freeport, IL". Both in absolutely fine, clean condition. $18.00.
CDV by Josiah Knecht, Traveling Artist CDV292-9 Sometimes it's hard to be sure whether children in a photo are siblings, but there's no doubt that these three are. They are spitting images of each other! And how serious they look, posing very stiffly, with the youngest one holding her doll. There's a great backmark, also. "Josiah Knecht, The "Excelsior" Traveling Artist". In clean, near fine condition. $25.00

Most stamped with the backmark of "Herve & Debitte, Paris". Some scattered soiling to images and mounts. Else, good toning and contrast in this very nice collection. $50.00, the set.

CDV by Owen, Newton, NJ CDV290-9 Full length studio portrait CDV of a young woman posing in a voluminous dress. But what makes this particular CDV special is that the photographer's "signature" is in the image. Attached to the base of the column is a small block of wood with the name "Owen" painted on it. What a great detail! Backmark of "I. G. Owen, Newton, NJ". Some light soiling to mount recto. Else in fine condition. $25.00
